In 1994 , the first war broke out in Chechnya with Russia wanting to stop the independence of Chechnya. The capital Grozny, was relentlessly pounded by the Russian military killing something like 35,000 civilians according to conservative estimates. I went in to a town just across the border from Grozny called Khasavyurt in the neighbouring state of Dhagestan. This still counts as the worst job I've done. The conditions were poor, the journey there was a nightmare, I was mugged in the street and we didn't quite know when we would get out. Here a few pictures to tell the story.
